Valentine’s Day Flowers and Their Impact on Freight Rates and Capacity

February is one of the most unique months in the transportation industry and Valentine’s Day plays a major role in shaping freight demand. Each year the floral supply chain puts pressure on capacity and pricing across several key regions in the United States.

In the weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day, millions of flowers move through the supply chain. The majority of fresh cut flowers enter the US through Miami after being imported from South America. From there they move quickly to distribution centers wholesalers and retailers nationwide. Because flowers are highly perishable, shippers rely heavily on refrigerated trucking and strict delivery windows.

This seasonal surge creates tight capacity in reefer markets. As demand spikes, available trucks become harder to secure and freight rates often increase. Even shippers outside of floral or retail industries can feel the impact. Carriers reposition equipment to higher paying lanes which can reduce capacity in other regions.

Weather can amplify these challenges. February often brings winter storms across the Midwest and Northeast which can slow transit times and further tighten capacity. When weather disruptions overlap with peak seasonal demand, pricing volatility becomes more common.

For shippers planning February moves, preparation is key. Securing capacity early locking in rates when possible and working with transportation partners who understand seasonal trends can help reduce disruptions. Visibility and communication are especially important during this time since timing is critical for temperature-controlled freight.

Valentine’s Day may last only one day but its impact on freight markets is felt throughout the first half of February. Understanding these seasonal patterns helps shippers make smarter decisions and avoid last minute surprises.
